The Philippine Naga

The Philippine Naga are a type of fresh water mermaids, but instead of having fish tails, they have the lower body of a water snake and the upper body of a human female. In Philippine folklore and mythology, they are often described as having an alluring face, curvaceous body and long flowing hair. Moreover, they are vicious to adults but gentle to children and are considered the protectors of springs, wells and rivers. They bring rain, and thus fertility, but are also thought to bring disasters such as floods and drought.

My concept of the Philippine Naga is illustrated as a guardian protector of the springs and rivers, which is why I drew her with a Kampilan sword. The handle of her sword is a Bakunawa. I made it a symbol because the Bakunawa was rumored to be a Naga which was cursed by the Goddess: Bulan, for obssesing with the moon and longing to possess them.

Here's one of my illustrations for a long term personal project related to Philippine folklore and Mythology. I'll be updating this project soon and add more mythical creatures from the Philippines.
